A well-qualified manufacturing expert and business manager with 35 years global experience, Graham is the Founder and Managing Director of ASL.
Graham began his career in electronic design at Philips and quickly moved on to quality management and then manufacturing. He then moved on to a senior management role at Meggitt Petroleum Systems responsible for Operations.
In 1995 Graham believed he had the necessary skill set and experience to run his own successful manufacturing business, following a re-mortgage of his home and a list of potential customers, ASL was born.
Under his leadership ASL has grown from a start-up to a well-respected brand name, especially in the Automotive, Utility and Nuclear Markets.
Now occupying its own brand new 32,000sqft factory in Bolton, ASL is very much a family business with all Graham’s children, Gareth, Sophie and Oliver helping to ensure that the high standards of customer service are maintained.

After leaving school at 16 Anne started as a trainee accountant at the Town Hall in Bolton.
She then moved onto British Aerospace working within accounts and then took a career break to bring up her family. When the children were of school age she then joined her Husband Graham Balshaw, and became a Director of ASL, running the Accounts and Personnel Department.
“I’m not looking for a quick sale, my priority is to develop long lasting relationships with all my customers”.
Gareth joined the business in 2002 at the age of 18 and has since then gone through the ranks from Shop Floor Operator, Storeman, Purchasing Mgr, Sales Mgr and now Sales Director.
In his own words…
When I joined the business 13 years ago we had a sales turnover of £400K. I have been lucky enough to be part of the sales growth and I’m delighted to see the company now at almost £3m turnover.
With a great workforce of 50 well trained staff and a fantastic 30,000sq foot factory I am confident we can achieve a sales turnover of £5m by 2020.
From my time spent as Purchasing Mgr I understand the importance of a good supplier relationship. I’m not looking for a quick sale, my priority is to develop long lasting relationships with all my customers.
I will always remember the smaller customers who played an important role getting us to where we are today and I am delighted that many of those customers are still with us.
As we have grown it has put more pressure on the account management of each customer and as a result I have employed a full time Sales Account Manager where we will maintain a professional level of service.

Andrew joined ASL in 2015.
Andrew looks after ASL’s small to medium customers and responsible for generating brand new business.
He has excellent customer service skills which are very important in growing the business to £5m by 2019.
Business Development Manager
Sophie has been with ASL for almost 10 years, working her way up from Office Assistant to now Marketing Manager.
With years of knowledge and experience behind her in the electrical engineering industry, Sophie now manages a team of marketing professionals.
Production Manager (High Volume Cable Preparation)
“My target is to ensure customer orders are built to the highest quality and delivered on time”.
Rob has been with ASL for 12 years and holds the fantastic achievement of 10 Years Service with 100% attendance!
He started off as a production operator of cable assemblies, then became Team Leader, and now after showing an outstanding performance over the years, he has become a Production Manager.
Rob is responsible for the manufacture of high volume cable assembly department which accounts for 25% of ASL’s sales revenue.
Production Manager (Electronics Section)
“My team will always try to meet or exceed the customers’ expectations, after all the customer is the only reason we are here doing what we do”.
Dan is ASL’s longest serving employee where in 2018 he will have served 20 years!
He started off as a production operator and over his many years has gained great knowledge and experience where he is now a Production Manager responsible for 30% of the company’s sales revenue.
This 30% is made up of mainly 2 customers and the products made are going into the highly safety critical Industries of Nuclear and Test & Measurement.
Production Manager (Automotive Section)

Damien is another long serving staff member, we can’t get rid of them!
He has been with ASL for 14 years, starting off as a production assembler before moving into a more senior role of Production Manager.
Damien’s background and expertise is in Automotive and so he is responsible for the manufacture of our Automotive wiring harness and Automotive battery and power cable assembly department.
Damien also holds the fantastic achievement of 100% attendance over the last 5 years!

Gareth is another long serving member completing 10 years service in 2015.
Gareth started off as a production assembler and after showing great leadership, dedication and enthusiasm, was recently promoted to Production Manager for our Control Panel Manufacture department.
Gareth is fully qualified in Business Improvements and IPC A-620.
Since leaving school Amanda has always had a passion for Accounts and chose this as her career path.
Amanda is our fully qualified Accounts Manager who is responsible for overseeing customer and supplier payments.
Being the youngest child of ASL’s Owner and MD, Oliver has been involved in the business from a very young age!
Oliver joined the family business in 2014 after completing his Foundation Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Oliver is currently responsible for buying all materials for the company but also oversees some production, to gain experience and knowledge in Operations.
He also oversees Quality and Health & Safety – a man of many hats!
